About this workshop - Mindfulness: Turning Towards Existence, Touching Being
Mindfulness is a simple practice of bringing our intention to pay attention to our unfolding experience in the present moment, with acceptance, bringing body-mind together.
In turning towards our experience, and paying attention mindfully, this workshop will highlight the ontological givens of human existence: Change, impermanence, uncertainty, suffering/existential anxiety, and death.
This workshop is intended to give therapists, counsellors, and anyone interested in exploring the human condition, an experience of Mindfulness, and the possibilities that emerge from turning towards our unfolding experience non-judgmentally, and meeting it in Mindful awareness, even if our experience is one of suffering, is painful and difficult.
Mindfulness is a practice of awakening the heart-mind to the human condition with kindness, and compassion for our self and others.
The focus is on practising becoming present to our experience, acknowledging it, accepting it, being with it, and resting in awareness of how things are, without needing to push anything unpleasant away or needing to grasp at anything pleasant – resting in awareness of both unpleasant and pleasant.
Practising again, and again, and again…
Mindfulness practice helps therapists in clearing the space to be present for clients; in offering presence and care to self; in staying grounded in the midst of another person’s suffering; in recognising the human condition common to both therapist and client; in cultivating radical acceptance; in developing a ‘tender heart’ ; in recognising the interconnectedness of body/mind, self/other; in monitoring and honouring the messages from our body-mind in the therapeutic relationship; developing spaciousness for things to reveal themselves to us.
It points to possibilities of a radical relational change, in how we begin to relate to self and others. The value of Mindfulness is recognised in clinical use.

About this course: The Therapeutics of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)
This 24 hour course is designed to give you an experience of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction which was pioneered by Jon Kabat-Zinn at his Stress Reduction clinic at the Centre for Mindfulness, UMass Medical School, USA. This course will also look at how closely aligned MBSR and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) are, and the principles that underlie both practices.
The Mindfulness approach will teach you meditation as a scientific, non-religious method. Mindfulness is an intentional pointing of your attention towards your moment-to-moment awareness of your experience of physical sensations, breathing, thoughts and feelings. This course will help you to recognize the thought patterns and emotions that accompany stress, and to bring Mindful attention to the body/mind connection in everyday living. You will learn how to recognise your unique reactions to stress, and to find more effective ways to respond to stressful situations utilising your own inner resources to find greater health and well being.
